Dr. Satcher completed his four-year term as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States in February 2002. He also served as Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services from February 1998 to January 2001, making him only the second person in history to have held both positions simultaneously. He was also Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1993 to 1998 and was the first person to serve as Director of the CDC and Surgeon General of the United States.
Dr. Satcher is Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities at the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) in Atlanta, Georgia. He occupies the Poussaint-Satcher-Cosby Chair in Mental Health at the Morehouse School of Medicine.
From December 2004 to July 2006 Dr. Satcher served as the Interim President of the Morehouse School of Medicine. In recognition of his accomplishments as Interim President the board voted to change his title to President in May of 2006 and to approve the development of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine. In January 2002, Dr. Satcher was named the Director of the new National Center for Primary Care (NCPC) at the Morehouse School of Medicine – a position that he held until becoming Interim President. Before assuming this post, he served as a Senior Visiting Professor with the Kaiser Family Foundation for six months.
Other leadership positions which Dr. Satcher has held include the Interim Dean of the Charles R. Drew University Medical & Sciences Center from 1977 to 1979, and President of Meharry Medical College from 1982 to 1993.
As Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Satcher led the department’s effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health, an initiative that was incorporated as one of the two major goals of Healthy People 2010. Dr. Satcher has received over 40 honorary degrees and numerous awards. Most recently he received the Sackler Award from Research!America for sustained leadership at the national level, and the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute Visionary Award for engagement in research and education in the State of Georgia.
