Welcome to Health Power's Asian Pacific Islander Channel. You will find a broad array of health related information regarding the numerous and diverse populations and countries that make up the Asian and Pacific Islander people worldwide. Special attention, of course, is given to those groups that reside in the United States and Pacific Islands. Attention is also called to the racial/ethnic health disparities which affect these populations.
You will find such information as the distribution of Asians and Pacific Islanders, worldwide; a list of the Pacific Islands ranging from Fiji to Papua New Guinea to the Philippines, the 10 leading causes of death of Asian Americans, and a comprehensive review of HIV, AIDS and Asian Americans including risk factors, risk practices, and barriers to prevention.

Suki Terada Ports, Co-Editor, Health Power Asian-Pacific Islander Channel and Member of its Professional Advisory Council
She is Founder and Executive Director, Family Health Project, Inc. Prior positions held include Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Minority Task Force on AIDS; Co-Founderand/or Steering Committee member of National Minority AIDS Council, East Coast Asian and Pacific Islander Network, and Voices of Women of Color Against HIV/AIDS. She is also a member of several Boards of Directors including Asian & Pacific Islanders Coalition on HIV/AIDS (APICHA), and Iris House.
Publications include "Learning Culture: on Asian and Pacific Islander Populations", in U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration Journal on Innovations/Issues in HIV Service Delivery, Special Projects of National Significance, 1996. She earned her Baccalaureate degree from Smith College.
Erme C. Maula, R.N., MSN, Co-Editor of Health Power Asian-Pacific Islander Channel and Member of its Professional Advisory Council.
She is also an Advance Practice Community Health Nurse, and Consultant to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. In the latter capacity, she is coordinating HIV/AIDS programs and ensuring that people have access to culturally and linguistically appropriate health care. Her background also includes maternal and child care, women's health, and community health.
An active advocate for the visibility of Asian and Pacific Islander communities, Ms. Maula is Chair of both the East Coast Asian AIDS Network, and the Asian and Pacific Islander Women's HIV/AIDS National Network. Ms. Maula is also a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
Miyong Kim, RN, Ph.D., Co-Editor of Health Power Asian-Pacific Islander Channel
and Member of its Professional Advisory Committee. Currently Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, prior positions include Adjunct Faculty Member at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. She has authored/co-authored articles in the Journal of Nursing, American Journal of Hypertension, International Journal of Hypertension, Obesity Research, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Asian American and Pacific Islander Journal of Health, and Ethnicity and Disease. Dr. Kim is: a member of the Society of Geriatric Cardiology and American Statistical Association; Commissioner of the Commission on Aging and Retirement for Baltimore City; and a Fellow of the American Heart Association.
She earned her B.S. Degree in Nursing, PhD in Nursing/Psychology from the University of Arizona College of Nursing.
Donna Wang, M.D., Co-Editor of Health Power Asian-Pacific Islander Channel
is Professor of Medicine, Director of Investigative Medicine and Vice Chair for Basic Research at Michigan State University. She has served on a variety of National Institutes of Health (NIH) advisory bodies, and on the editorial boards of such publications as Hypertension; Current Hypertension Reviews; American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulation; and the Journal of Cardiothoracic-Renal Research.
Dr. Wang's major volunteer activities for the American Heart Association include serving on its: Publication Committee; Science Advisory & Coordinating Committee; Women & Minorities Leadership Committee, as Chair; and Advocacy Coordinating Committee. In addition, Dr. Wang is President and Chairperson of the Board of the Academy of Cardiovascular Research Excellence.
The numerous past and present consultancies of Dr. Wang include The Council of Healthcare Advisers, and The Wellcome Trust. She earned her M.D. degree from Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences in Guangzhou, China.
