Introduction to the Caribbean | Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles | Key Caribbean Flags | Caribbean Birth Rates, Infant Mortality Rates and Life Expectancies | Racial and Ethnic Overview

The West Indies consist of the islands of the Caribbean Sea and can be divided into the Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles.

Following is a description, from geography.about.com, of the Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles.

Greater Antilles - The four largest islands in the northwestern portion of the Caribbean Sea. They are:

  • Cuba
  • Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic)
  • Jamaica
  • Puerto Rico

Lesser Antilles - The smaller islands of the Caribbean. They include the:

  • Virgin Islands
  • Windward Islands
  • Leeward Islands

The Windward Islands are called that because they are exposed to the wind (windward of the northeast trade winds), and the Leeward Islands are called that because they are away from the wind (lee).

After extensive research, Health Power could find no one classification or classification system for The Caribbean which included all of the islands that many residents and immigrants from The Caribbean consider as home. That's why Health Power decided - in consultation with its own Caribbean experts, plus a wide variety of international sources - to develop what we call Health Power's Caribbean.

Welcome Again! We look forward to helping you, your family, and the Caribbean family as a whole to live healthier and longer lives.
